The last apartment we finished on this block didn’t stay on the market long. Unit 6 at 228 Main St had a renter lined up before the trim was even on, and the new tenant moved in just days after the crew packed up.
Now it’s the next one’s turn. 240 1/2 Main St is fully renovated and available now. If Unit 6 was any sign, it won’t be open for long.
Upstairs From Main Street, Rebuilt From the Inside Out

240 1/2 sits above the storefront at 240 Main, right in the middle of downtown Decatur. Our crew spent weeks taking it back to the basics. They handled the parts you’ll see every day and the parts you’ll never have to think about.
A Kitchen You’ll Actually Want to Cook In
- New cabinets with new hardware and a pantry door
- Countertops cut on site, stained twice, and sealed
- New refrigerator (we opened up the doorway so it fits right)
- New dishwasher with its own new wiring and outlet
- New gas range on a newly installed gas line
- New faucet, sink, and drain lines, plus an overhead vent
A Bathroom Done Right
- Tub and shower torn out, re-plumbed with a new valve, and retiled
- New shower head and handle, freshly grouted and caulked
- New toilet on a repaired flange
- New faucet and water lines, new vanity mirror
- New light and exhaust fan, plus new tile flooring
Throughout the Apartment
- New flooring and underlayment, with clean transitions room to room
- New light fixtures and a living room ceiling fan
- 10 new outlets and 7 new switches and plates
- New smoke/fire alarms
- Fresh paint on the walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and doorways
- Freshly painted stairs and entry
- New door knobs, closet rods, bifold doors, and blinds
- New baseboards and quarter round
Behind the Walls
This is the part most listings never mention. The crew traced and repaired water leaks, fixed the plumbing fittings between the apartment and the storefront below, and got the water heater running properly again. You won’t see any of it. You’ll just never have to call us about it.
The last step was a top-to-bottom cleaning, so it’s ready for move-in.
Want to Open a Business Downstairs?
The apartments aren’t the only space on this block. We still have commercial units available on Main Street, including the open-concept storefronts we featured in Now Available: Two Commercial Spaces on Main Street in Decatur. They already have plumbing and electrical in place, basement storage, and parking out front and behind.
Here’s something a lot of first-time business owners don’t know: the City of Decatur and its local partners offer programs that can help cover some of the cost of getting started. Depending on the business and the project, that can include:
- Matching façade grants from the City for storefront improvements like signs, windows, doors, and awnings
- Small business loans through the Community Investment Corporation of Decatur
- A sales-tax break on building materials for projects inside the Decatur–Macon County Enterprise Zone
Each program has its own rules and funding windows, and some need the property owner to apply. That’s where we come in. Because the building’s owner is local, we can work with you on owner-side programs instead of leaving you to figure it out alone. Ask us when you call.
Why This Block Keeps Getting Better
Every unit we finish here adds to the one before it. Mr. Bradshaw explained why he bought into this building in the first place in I Didn’t Just Buy a Building, I Solved a Problem. He also wrote about what filled storefronts mean for a street in Two Empty Storefronts, Two New Beginnings.
